About acupuncture
Acupuncture is a sophisticated and complete medical system that has been used for millennia to treat disease, illness and pain. It continues to this day to be an effective medical intervention, taking in the patient as a whole while tackling the root cause of disease.
What happens in an acupuncture appointment.
During your first appointment a full medical history will be taken as well as details about your presenting condition. I will feel your pulse, look at your tongue and feel the condition of the acupuncture channels along your lower legs and forearms. All of these give a picture of your general health and presenting condition and will help me to make a diagnosis and design treatment plan.
Most people start to feel more relaxed during treatment and some even fall asleep.
An acupuncture treatment can include many elements:
Needles
The needles are very fine, single use and sterile. They are gently inserted into specific acupuncture points on the body, usually the lower legs, forearms and back. These trigger and stimulate the body's natural healing mechanisms. Needle insertion is generally painless although some people may experience a dull ache or a sensation like mild electricity. Some people are more sensitive and in these cases I will use smaller needles and adjust technique accordingly. Needles remain in place for around 20 minutes and are disposed of on removal. There is very rarely any blood. There may be occasional light bruising.
Guasha, Cupping and massage.
If you have obvious tension in your body I may use guasha, cupping or massage to relieve this before using needles. Guasha is a technique where the skin and muscles are gently scraped to reduce tension and remove other obstructions to healing. People report that they feel wonderful after guasha as pain is reduced and range of movement increased. Suction cups are used to reduce tension and to remove what we call pathogens, which cause blockages in the body which then produce pain. Guasha and cupping both tend to leave marks on the skin so if this is unwanted we can always use massage to similar effect.
Moxa and heat lamp
Moxa and heat lamp play a big role in bringing the body back to balance. Moxa is a herb that is burnt near the skin to warm and nourish areas of cold and deficiency and also to deepen the effect of needles. The heat lamp can be used over the belly, back, knees or feet while the needles do their work. Both treatments are very pleasant and support the general effect of treatment.
Lifestyle advice.
I may suggest that you make small changes to your lifestyle in terms of diet, exercise and stress management. Many illnesses develop over a long time and can be connected to our lifestyle choices so it can be really helpful to address these.
After treatment
It's normal to feel a little sleepy after treatment so it's a good idea to take it easy for an hour or two afterwards. Some people may see a slight worsening in their symptoms as the body works to rediscover a balanced state. Saying that, some patients find that they feel better immediately after treatment. It's important to note any changes and report back at the next appointment.
How many treatments?
Most people need a course of treatments. Depending on your condition I will probably recommend a course of three to six treatments and then a review. Saying that, some people experience great results first time. It depends on how long you've had the problem and how serious or complicated it is. Some people may need top up treatments once a month once the condition is brought under control.
